What Type Of Guitar Lessons Should I Get?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

With a need to find some guitar lessons and a bewildering array of guitar styles to choose from, how do you decide what type of guitar lessons to get? There’s classical, pop, jazz, rock and all variations in between, so what do you use as a basis for choosing your guitar style?

If you decide to learn pop, rock or jazz you will be getting coaching in scales and chords that you will eventually be using to compose your own songs and improvise your own guitar solos. Classical guitar will require you to learn to read music and at the beginning at least, what you learn will not be used for improvisation or composition. But classical guitar will teach you some advanced techniques and with those techniques you will have the freedom to play without the accompaniment of another musician.

Although classical guitar was originally developed to play the music of past centuries and the classical music of the early twentieth century, a lot of popular music has been arranged for classical guitar, notably the songs of The Beatles. Of course if you go to the trouble of learning musical theory and classical guitar techniques, other styes of guitar will be quite easy to play - at least form a technical point of view.

One way of learning about the different genres of guitar music and to learn songs and instrumental pieces quickly, is to download tablature editor software like TablEdit or GuitarPro. These programs play tabs as MIDI files and display them in tab and conventional sheet music. Using these guitar software programs you can hear what unfamiliar music sounds like and decide whether you want to play them or not. Having the MIDI files hand in hand with the tab you are learning makes the process of learning new songs much easier.

A piece of guitar philosophy that novice guitarists rarely get to hear is the idea of learning relatively few pieces of music and playing them well rather than learning hundreds of pieces and playing them in a half-assed fashion. The fact is if you learn a limited number of songs at the beginning of your career will give you a musical grounding that will enable you to expand your repertoire with a deeper understanding of how your repertoire fits together and relates to various styles of music.

Whenever the subject of discussion is the type of guitar lessons to get somebody always suggests just follow your own interests. Sometimes this is not a great deal of help. I hope that this article has given you some information that you can use to help you decide between what you need to learn and what you would like to learn.

Learn And Master Guitar Chords Scales And Arpeggios

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Learn and Master Guitar Chords Scales And Arpeggios in order to master the guitar. A complete and thorough understanding of your guitar can not be attained without an adequate knowledge of the fundamental or rudimentary elements of guitar playing and understanding. You will eventually come to realize that it is not via just one, but through many aspects of guitar playing that your comprehension of the instrument will be greatly increased.

You need to learn and master guitar chords.  Chords are a special and favorite subject of not just the guitar player, but also for the guitar music maker who desires to make chord progressions and great sounding music.  The guitar improvisor needs to understand chords to embellish them and to improvise over them in a way that will sound unique and within the musical framework being played over.  It is important to have the proper instruction and guidance in learning guitar chords due to the fact that while there are many chord books, online diagrams, and other downloadable programs giving you chords to play on the guitar, in reality, these do not provide what you need to master chords in a way that will make you a great player, music maker or an effective band member.  You need guitar software that is high end and will get the job done for you.

Learn and master guitar scales to be able to play lead guitar like all the guitar heroes that you admire from all of your favorite bands and artists of various styles.  Guitar scales will take you through a window of playing that is a full complement to your guitar chords.  You may think that you don’t need to learn and master guitar scales because you either have no interest in becoming a blazing lead player or because you do not think that you will ever be able to realistically understand or obtain the ability to do so.  But regardless of whether or not you can become a master of guitar scales for these reasons, you need to learn guitar scales because they are important even to melody ideas.  As a music maker you want to have a grip upon, and knowing of, your guitar scales so you can make great music.  Also your lead playing does not need to be fast and furious.  It often won’t be of use to the music you are expressing anyway.  And while you are thinking of all of this you have to learn and master your guitar arpeggios to become a well rounded guitarist and to playing the things that you sometimes think are scales from various songs when in reality they are playing arpeggios.

What you need to do is to check yourself into a guitar program that will give you the things like this that you need to become better at your craft.  It can be difficult no matter what level of player you are, whether beginner, intermediate or some level of advanced as the time you put into learning the guitar and the money you spend on doing so, rarely gives you the results you desire. This is hardly surprising.   Remember, it can be tough because the instrument is difficult to get a grip upon, and there are many options learning the guitar from a music college, to private lessons, to the “hokey dokey” world of online guitar learning and cheap program downloads. You can get the most incredible and quality level of guitar education available if you are willing to spend more than fifty bucks on your passion and you find the ultimate guitar software product that is guaranteed to take you there. There has been a guitar evolution in the learning field for students so they can really learn and master their guitar chords, scales and arpeggios.

Would you like to master the guitar or bass? At www.springofknowledge.com you can find the ultimate guitar or bass university at home with the most powerful interactive guitar and bass lessons software that gives you the best teaching and practice workstation available. You will master music theory, pro level fretboard study, lead guitar playing, rhythm guitar, musical structure, guitar modes and more.

Acoustic Guitar Slap Technique

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Over the past few years quite a few guitar players have learnt the “slap technique”. When you are playing the acoustic guitar the question sometimes cones up of what to do to make your guitar playing a little more interesting. This is where stuff like string muting, striking the body of the guitar with the right hand and other exotic techniques come to the rescue.

Now you can add the slap technique to you arsenal of guitar skills. The slap technique kind of creates the illusion that you have percussion player in your pocket. It brings a little drama to your guitar playing and helps to add some emphasis to the rhythm. Basically this is achieved by slapping the guitar strings withe the thumb of your right hand.

Here’s a word of caution: you can’t use the slap technique if you have a pick in your hand. It won’t work. You need your hand empty to execute the slap. If you use a pick you are left with good old string muting to produce a similar effect.

There are two ways you can make the slap technique work for you. You can separate your slaps from your picking and chord playing. Or you can slap the strings at the same time as you strum the chords.

Let’s take the first way first, doing the slapping and the picking separately. This is the easier of the two methods. So you are playing notes on the beat and your slap is heard off the beat. Once you have this technique down you can add notes and slaps wherever you want but let’s keep it simple for the sake of the explanation. So you play a chord by plucking and you slap the sixth string with your thumb.

The second method of using the slap technique is to strum the strings with your first finger while at the same time slapping the sixth string with your thumb. This is a new kind of movement that you will not have found in guitar playing before so it’s going to take some slow and tedious practice.

You can also pluck the strings with your thumb and fingers and hit the strings with your fingers as well as your thumb which gives another type of sound. If you find some videos of guitar players using the slap technique with the acoustic guitar you will quickly see why dedicating some time to this style of playing will pay off.

Newbie guitar players are flocking to Guitar How-To for the free articles, tutorials and videos on every aspect of guitar playing you can think of. Fast track your guitar expertise now at http://guitar-how-to.com/

Learn And Master Piano By Will Barrow - A Great Resource For Piano Teachers Teaching Group Piano Lessons

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

There’s no doubt that learning to play the piano in a group situation is fast becoming the most popular way to learn. There are many advantages to using this system, especially for the pupils who enrol in such courses. Probably the main advantage for the pupil is, you are not alone, there are many like minded people with you all aiming for the same thing and because of the nature of learning to play the piano there is no element of competitiveness but rather a positive I can do this attitude and the fact that others are with you learning the same thing is extremely liberating in that the pressure of learning to play is reduced dramatically and absorbed by the whole group rather than on one individual learning one to one.

Normally in a group situation, up to 12 pupils will attend each provided with their own piano, these are normally electric so as to make use of headphones. Some courses also offer a communication system that can isolate each pupil privately via headphones.

Now there is a new resource, video, this is starting to be used in many piano learning groups and like all great ideas it’s so simple. All the teacher needs is a DVD player, a TV and the Learn and Master Piano course by Will Barrow. This course provides an incredible amount of teaching material for teachers and pupils alike. The course is designed for beginners and advanced players and with the use of DVDs provides piano lessons and practice time all with the help of video and Will barrow who is the courses teacher.

This course is not expensive which means every pupil can buy their own copy and because the course is so detailed, teachers can create separate groups of pupils with different abilities. This again has the effect of reducing pressure on any individual, because you are always going to be in a group with the same ability as yourself and if you are a quick learner you can move on to the next level in a different group still using the same course. I think its brilliant and I do think many piano teachers are going to start using the Learn and Master Piano course. It’s probably the best teaching resource since the invention of the electric piano.

Find a lot more about Learn And Master Piano and Pianoforall courses at The Piano Lessons Software Expert website. If you need a Piano have a look at these Used Digital Piano Bargains.

Is There A Fingerpicking Guitar?

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

What is a fingerpicking guitar? There has always been a division of acoustic guitars between “folk” and “classical” which mostly refers to whether the guitar is fitted with nylon or steel strings. A nylon string guitar is ideal for fingerpicking because it is easier on the finger nails. The steel string guitars are suited to flatpicking but some people do play fingerstyle on steel strings.

Some guitar makers have recently taken up the practice of calling certain guitars - like the Martin OM-2 - “fingerpicking guitars”. Is this label really accurate? Is one guitar really better for fingerpicking than another? Some people say that guitars best suited for fingerstyle measure one and three-quarter inches across the nut and guitars better for flatpicking measure one and eleven-sixteenth inches. That could be getting a little technical.

Of course Dreadnought size guitars, that many guitarists see as flatpicking guitars are a bit awkward for fingerpicking. This is not a universal opinion - some players prefer the larger size guitars for fingerstyle. There’s even evidence that Merle Travis played a Martin D28.

The Dreadnought guitar was specifically designed to project sound in a live, unplugged setting. As most of the live acoustic gigs of the time were oriented to bluegrass, this would suggest that the larger guitar was made for the flatpicker.

Indeed flatpicking sounds excellent on a Dreadnought or one of the larger style guitars because they produce a uniformly big sound. This contrasts with the smaller guitars that do not have such an overpowering bass but have wider nuts to accommodate fingerstyle players.

A guitar like the Martin D28 is ideally suited to bluegrass, gospel, country and rock. Everybody agrees that the guitar has a great bass response but some people actually find the treble a little on the thin side. Of course, the strings you choose to play on has some bearing on the sound.

A guitar that does not need to be picked with a great deal of force will always be better suited to fingerstyle players. The guitars with small bodies are thought by a lot of guitarists to be fingerstyle guitars because the treble notes are not overpowered by the bass as would be the case with Dreadnoughts.

This article has given you some of the opinions from all sides of the debate about whether particular guitars are for fingerstle or flatpicking. In the real world nobody takes any notice of rules or specifications. You find a guitar that you like to play and you stay with it.

Travis Picking Guitar

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

If you want an all round picking technique for guitar, choose Travis picking. The Travis referred to in the name is Merle Travis, the country guitar legend who not only invented a guitar picking style but also had a few hits with his songwriting. Travis picking originally just used the thumb and index finger but was extended to the use of the second and third fingers by Chet Atkins in the mistaken belief that Travis could not possibly be getting his sound by the use of just one finger.

The basis of Travis picking is the alternating bass. This is because finger picking on the guitar was inspired by ragtime piano playing. It might help you to get the spirit of Travis picking if you remember that.

An accomplished Travis picking guitarist has a whole range of picking patterns he can use to accompany and solo with. To begin your Travis picking journey you will need to learn one picking pattern and get it flowing smoothly. The basic idea is that the thumb keeps the rhythm going while the fingers pick the melody and the grace notes.

To start practicing Travis picking, fret an A minor chord with your left hand and pick the open fifth string with your thumb while at the same time picking the open first string with your second finger. That’s your first beat.

The next beat is made up of two movements: pick the fourth string with your thumb (that’s half a beat) and pick the second string with your first finger (another half a beat).

Pick the fifth string again with your thumb for half a beat and then pick the first string with your second finger for half a beat.

The final of your four beats is: pick the fourth string for half a beat and then the second string with the first finger.

The tab looks like this (remember you’re holding an A minor chord:

e-0———-0———–|

B——-1———1——|

G————————|

D—–2———2——–|

A-0——–0————-|

E————————|

Even if you have no experience with guitar finger picking, you should have this pattern repeating itself nicely within a week. Of course, you can try it out on different chords and vary the strings you pick. Don’t try to go too fast at first, because you need to be very comfortable with the way your fingers are moving on your guitar before you attempt any Travis picking at high speed.

Finding Guitar Tabs For Songs And Riffs

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

People with a taste for guitar orientated songs often find themselves limited by their own tastes in music. We all have a fairly narrow range of musical experience and we often need some advice on what else is out there to add to our repertoire of songs to listen to and play on the guitar.

If you are a classical or surf guitar fan you probably won’t know much about bands like Soundgarden who are one of your more prominent bands from the grunge era. You can find guitar tabs for their songs on tab sites and you will be adding to your musical education by getting some idea of how Soundgarden songs are constructed.

The grunge sound is chunky and expressive and power-chordy. You can get that gravelly sound happening with effects or fooling around with your amp settings. Some songs you could study are Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days and Pretty Noose.

Staying with grunge pieces, Nirvana songs will help you feel like a real guitar player without taxing your technique. About A Girl and Polly come to mind as songs for enthusiastic guitarists.

There are some songs and instrumental pieces that sound really intricate but are not hard to play. Classical Gas by Mason Williams is an outstanding example but Fruit Tree by Nick Drake is another song that gives you some satisfaction as do most of his songs. You can also find tabs for Paul Simon songs. His compositions are worth a look for any acoustic guitar player.

If you are up for challenge Tommy Emmanuel arrangements are worth a try. His style is based on Travis picking but his approach to the guitar is totally unique and it’s a pleaure to watch him tackle an old favorite the you thought nobody could do anything with.

The theme from the movie The Deerhunter is a nice acoustic piece that is not hard to play. Another classic every acoustic guitar player should attempt is Anji by Davy Graham. Again, this is a simple piece that sounds fantastic. If you pick up a guitar at a party and play Anji you will easily make people forget the guy who played Smoke On The Water.

To begin practicing the songs you find on tabs sites you will need to get your chord fingering and your sense of rhythm going. It won’t take months of practice but to play simple chords in time without fluffed notes is the beginning of your career as a guitar player.

Now you have a collection of guitar songs to learn, here’s what you must do: Print out the tabs of your favorite songs. Don’t put them in any particular order, just start by attempting to play whatever song is on the top of your pile. If it seems too hard to play, grab another one and try it. You will eventually find a song you are comfortable with and when you have learned it you will have one song and a bunch of motivation to go onto a second one. Now keep going till you’ve gone through your pile of guitar tabs.
